Waning Moon II - Completed

Waning Moon II Site Work

If I wanted to observe prior to the winter of 2003 at my home in Pearl River, Louisiana, I had to take my telescope from inside the house and set it up before dark. In addition, due to the number of large trees on my property, I was severly limited in the amount of sky I could observe at any one time. Anything past the meridian was off limits, as the small area I could observe from was only clear to the East of Zenith.

On December 5th that all began to change. I had a lumber company remove about 20 large pine trees and an equal number of hardwoods from the southeast one-quarter acre on my 2.5 acre lot. This clearing is adjacent to another half-acre clearing in my neighbor's yard to the east of my property. All of a sudden I could see at least a 120 degree section of the sky centered on the Zenith. Below is the cleared area looking from the West tree line toward the East.

All the stumps have been ground out and most of the shavings have been removed. I borrowed my neighbors grader box and leveled off all the ruts created by the logging equipment. Design of the observatory is underway, and construction should commence shortly.
